TI-83 Introduction

Preliminaries and Hints

  1. The gray keys are the number keys. Example:     0           1    
  2. The blue keys on the right side of the keyboard are common math functions. Example:   +       —  
  3. The blue keys across the top will set up and display graphs. Example:   Y =     WINDOW
  4. Most keys on the calculator will have alternate actions. The primary function is stenciled in white on the key face.
  5. Secondary functions are accessed by pressing the     2ND     key.
  6. The ALPHA key accesses the alpha (letter) characters.
  7. Use A-LOCK (     2ND       ALPHA  ) to lock the Alpha function ON.

  8. To change the contrast of the LCD screen (brightness/darkness), press the     2ND     button and hold down the   ⇑   or   ⇓  keys. Note the yellow graphic stenciled on the calculator between the up and down keys.
  9. Pressing the CLEAR key will clear the LCD screen.
  10. QUIT (   2ND   MODE ) will end most actions, menus and the Alpha key lock.
  11. This tutorial will presume the default TI-83 settings.

    Select MEM -> Reset -> Defaults -> Reset (   2ND     +     5     2     2    ).

  13. TI-83 mode screenTo change any of the MODE settings, use the arrow keys (   ⇓     ⇐     ⇒     ⇑    ) to highlight the setting you want, then press   ENTER   to select that setting. For example setting the TI-83 so it will display just 2 numbers past the decimal (   MODE     ⇓     ⇒     ⇒     ⇒   ENTER  ) results in a mode screen which looks like this:

     
  14. If the TI-83 doesn't seem to turn on when the   ON   is pressed: Check that the contrast is turned up.
  15. ERR: SYNTAX means there is a problem in the way an equation is written. When you get that message screen, you may press   1    to Quit the message screen. By pressing   2     the TI-83 will Goto what it thinks the problem is. This is very useful. You will almost always want to press   2   .

The negation key is on the bottom row, next to  ENTER .
