  6. Examining the old treasure map, the grizzled old prospector wondered what that blank half of the map was hiding. Look as he may, he could see no lines or lettering that showed the last part of the trail to the lost mine of the Sierra Moonbeams. It must be written in an invisible ink. Maybe if he would spray a dilute solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) on the map, the alkaline solution would react with the phenolphthalein that is used in many invisible inks. If only there were some NaOH in the cabin.

Its a good thing she has the backup Cobaltite Oxygen Generator (COG). Cobalt reacts with water to form oxygen. With the colony tanks full of water for Aridous, she had lots of water. Now where was that cobaltite (CoAsS)?

  15. The terrorists were very sophisticated. They knew that the simplest way to disable the power station was to break the seals of the high-voltage switch cabinets. This would cause all the sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) insulating gas to leak out. Now with regular air inside, great sparks have erupted as the high-voltage shorts out between the switches and transformers. The seals can be patched, but where will you get the sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) you need to get the power plant working again?

  18. Tom the TIG welder was just about finished welding the aluminum alloy walkway for the new ferry terminal at Clinton. TIG stands for tungsten inert gas. Tom uses this special welding technique when working with alloys that are difficult to weld using conventional methods. Uh oh! He just ran out of the inert gas. Without the inert gas blowing on the metals as he welds, the oxygen in the atmosphere will react with the alloys making a weak weld. The inert gas blankets the weld area. If only you could find an inert gas such as argon (Ar) then Tom could finish the project on time.

  19. The plan was that if you saw the Nut-Hatch Raiders you would launch a warning rocket. If they were traveling by land, launch the crimson rocket with strontium in the rocket powder to give it the red color. If they are coming by sea launch the green barium rocket. There are the raiders rowing silently along the shore! No problem, get a green barium rocket and.... uh oh. The box of green barium rockets was mislabeled. They are all generic white rockets!
