Field Guides

A field guide is a compact reference for use while hiking, boating, driving, etc for identification of biotic and/or abiotic components of the natural world.

The class will create a field guide for Rosario Beach. Each student will create a page for the field guide. The pages will compiled so on the field trip you will be able to better understand and report about Rosario Beach.

  • Overview of the Puget Sound
  • Geology and beaches
  • Tides
  • Intertidal zones
    1. splash zone
    2. upper intertidal
    3. middle intertidal
    4. lower intertidal
  • Plankton
  • Land plants and higher sea plants
  • Mammals

Student provided data pages

The page format will be 8" by 5.5". The front side of the data sheet will have:
  1. Scientific name
  2. Common name(s)
  3. Image of the organism
  4. Habitat
The back side of the data sheet will have:
  1. Taxonomy
  2. Description (size, color, etc)
  3. Cool Fact

Each student will select one group to work with. Each species will require a data sheet.
