My Soil's Profile

In this project you will share with the class information about the soil found under your home. The source of your information is the Web Soil Survey.

Directions:

  1. Click the "Start WSS" button.
  2. Use the quick navigation dialog to select your Address or use the State and County. Enter the required information.
  3. Use the AOI tool on the Area of Interest Interactive Map.
  4. Do not zoom in too much! If you can easily see your house you have gone too far. The best scale is 1:12,000.
  5. With the AOI defined now click the Soil Map tab.
  6. When finished loading (which may take a moment) you should see the soil data layer on the map and a table of information about the soils found on the AOI.
  7. Click the Printable Version button.
  8. In the Printable Versions Options - Report Options dialog box select Custom Subtitle and type in your name.
  9. Select view.
  10. Print or save the .PDF document that downloads. You will be turning this in for credit!
  11. Note the number of the soil under your home (Map Unit Number).
  12. Find the Map Unit Number under the Map Unit Name column, click the name of the soil under your home.
  13. When the map unit description window opens, select the Printable Version. Select view.
  14. Again, in the Printable Versions Options - Report Options dialog box select Custom Subtitle and type in your name.
  15. Print or save the .PDF document that downloads. You will be turning this in for credit!

Presentation:

  1. You will informally share with the class information about your soil.
  2. Be prepared to explain to explain any data on the Map Unit Description!
  3. Prepare a scaled drawing of the typical profile for your soil.
  4. Be able to describe the plants in the Ecological Site description..
  5. We will use the Oral Presentation rubric.
